Philo of Alexandria straddled both the Greek and Jewish worlds of the first century, CE. He sought to harmonize pagan Greek philosophy’s emphasis on reason with the new idea of religious revelation. Both formats, he insisted, could lead towards wisdom and an understanding of our world. He basically invented medieval philosophy. Though his works were first ignored by, and then mostly lost to, the Jews, the early Christians preserved his writings through the centuries.
