the shin bet
israel’s internal intelligence agency
The General Security Service is usually known by its Hebrew acronym, Shaback, which itself is often shorted to just Shin Bet (the letters “S” and “B”). It’s the Israeli equivalent of the FBI, responsible for broad areas of counterterrorism, counter-espionage, and protecting national leaders and institutions, such as the Prime Minister and El Al. Shin Bet has known some fantastic successes, such as obtaining a secret speech by Soviet Premier Khrushchev in 1956; as well as major failures, like failing to protect Yitzhak Rabin from assassination in 1995.
