Ghassan Kanafani (1936-1972) was a a prominent Palestinian writer who experienced firsthand the Palestinian exodus in 1947-48. In his short story Jaffa, Land of Oranges, he wrote of the psychological and emotional impact on ordinary Palestinians forced to suddenly become refugees, including his own family. As an adult in Lebanon he joined the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a terrorist group. He was killed by an Israeli car bomb in 1972.
