British Major-General

Orde Wingate (1903-1944) was a colorful British military officer and hero who fought in Africa, Palestine, India, and East Asia. A fundamentalist Christian whose religiosity led to his obsessive support for Zionism, Wingate created the Special Night Squads: small raiding parties of Haganah soldiers to preemptively attack Arab villages that were staging assaults on Jewish settlements. Considered a national hero in Israel for his contributions to Jewish self-defense, Israeli military tactics, and communal morale, Wingate was killed in a plane crash in India in 1944, and was later buried at Arlington National Cemetery outside Washington, DC.
