Captain of the MS St. Louis
Gustav Schroder (1885-1959) was the captain of the MS St. Louis, the refugee ship that attempted to take over nine hundred German Jews to safety across the Atlantic in 1939. Insisting on treating his passengers with dignity, he refused to countenance any Nazi ideology aboard his ship. Upon being turned away from Cuba and ordered back to Germany, Schroder instead attempted to sail to the United States and Canada, eventually taking his passengers to Antwerp, Belgium. He is recognized as a Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem.
